I'm cheering on the Panthers because I seem to be a curse to every team of choice this year. So I'm going to pull a little cosmic-reverse-psychology. My arch rival, Stone Heart, is a Panther fan. He prophesied the demise of my Broncos and to get him back I'm rooting for his team tonight.
At 6-5 these guys are struggling with turnovers. Jake Delhomme has been a disappointment, even to himself. At the same time, Delhomme doesn't want to lose what many feel makes him a dangerous quarterback, even at his young age -- the fearlessness in which he approaches the game. Not unlike Brett Farve, he's never been shy about going for the big play. And if Cutler is 12, Jake's ... what? 14? (for inside joke, see previous post.)
That's what I like best in a quarterback. It provides such an element of surprise. You think the big-ol linebackers don't do anything but mow down people, and they come up with a very intelligent, quick witted play that wins the game. You think the quraterback is all "don't-touch-me" and he gets out there in harms way and makes a big play. That's why I'm a Bronco fan the most, because Elway played like that. I'm a Bronco fan today just because I am loyal.
But back to the Panthers... it's our little world-wide-web, global access, multi-national secret that I really want them to lose tonight. So we'll see how this works!
