Mission Organization
This is what my laundry room looked like before I went on my mission to organize it. It's in the garage, so it seldom rates on my priority list, unfortunately.

This weekend everyone was gone and I decided to take a look at what all was in the boxes that I was storing above the washer and dryer. Next thing I knew I had a paint can open and a roller in my hand. What could I do? I had to give in and paint! All I did was paint the back wall white. The wall behind the hot water heater isn't taped yet, so I didn't continue painting. I'll have to make the taping a project for a weekend coming soon.


Rob got me this nice indoor/outdoor carpet that goes all the way from the garage man door to the back wall. Before it was just a small path of green indoor/outdoor carpet, some commercial carpet coming from the family room, some hodge-podge remnant and then concrete. This looks SO much nicer, don't you think!?

Before the cabinets were a pink pickle stain, mahogany stain and a golden oak type of stain. The stand that the hot water heater is on is constructed of scrap 2x4's. After I painted the back wall I painted the cabinets and 2x4 stand grey. My washer and dryer are a brushed nickel color, so it just looks wonderful. I'm thinking I might close off the stand and put a drawer accessible from the front for a little additional storage.

Once I get the wall behind the hot water heater taped I will paint it as well. I'm not sure if I have enough white to do that whole wall, so I think I will go to Spenard Builders and look for a mismatched white. I don't have high requirements for this room; I just want it to look clean, inviting and cohesive.

If you look closely, you might be able to see in the before pictures how the pipes behind and just to the right of the washer and dryer are obvious. I painted them all white except for the red and black handles on the cold and hot water spigots and the red valve of the gas pipe going up the in the back right corner. Later I plan on painting the exhaust pipe from the heater (hanging from the ceiling) white like the other pipes.

Two other projects I plan on in this room are 1) to add a light and 2) to add a little divider hanging from the ceiling above the length of the counter top. There is a plug in on the ceiling near the heater, so I will plug into that some sort of fixture and lead it to the center of that space. When I add the divider, I'd like to either recess 3 lights or install pendant lighting. I'll have to research sales, yard sales and my favorite... ebay(!!) to see what kind of deals I can find.

My goal is to do a little bit of real, measurable progress each weekend. I usually look at it as one big enormous project and think "UGGGGGG! This is INSURMOUNTABLE!!" But every journey begins with just one step, n'est pas?
