Mike Vick and Tonght's Matchup
Catherine's Sports Trivia:

Q:Why were the New Orleans Saints named "the Saints"?

____________________________

Mike Vick got so frustrated from the 31-13 devistating loss to the Saints. We've all felt like that at one time or another. We just didn't have a gazillion cameras on us at the time...

Reminds me of Faith Hill's embarrassment. Come to find out, the media just blew it all out of porportion. The pepople that were back stage with her said "She was being playful while the nominations were being read and playful after." Underwood also didn’t take it seriously, according to her publicist, Jessie Schmidt, who said that Hill spoke to Underwood after the show and that the two were fine.

For Vick's full story click here.

I'm not saying it wasn't inappropriate, but we all screw up every now and again.

"It was very inappropriate. I was down, upset, frustrated. I just did one thing I've never done through all the games I've ever lost, no matter how frustrated I've been after a game. I don't know where it came from, but the people who know me know that's not me and that's not my character."

He mentioned in that article, "I don't know where that came from." I was just reading "...out of the abundance of the heart the mouth (or in this case, the finger) speaks." Luke 6:45. That's where it comes from, Mike.

That's where it comes from for all of us and he's not alone. He gets mercy from this fan because he's humble and sorry. If he was all in our faces and belligerant, I would lose respect for him. But that's not the way he's being. Like a good friend of mine, Chrissy Quigley, says... "Tomorrow's a new day... and then it will be someone else's turn to step in it." Get good, then go get 'em, Mike!

This is a Coreson Monday Night Football night. Rob's a Seahawk fan and Jacob's a Green Bay fan. I'm rooting for Green Bay because Jacob isn't here to do it for himself against dad.

Looks like Farve is going to try to play. He received an elbow injury last week, but is going to get out there and give it a try.

Quoting from the Seahaws' Fox Sports page:

TEAM REPORT: INSIDE SLANT

Starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is back in the lineup at a good time. Backup Seneca Wallace played well most of the time Hasselbeck was out, but his 2-2 record was a tale of two players. Wallace tossed five interceptions in his two losses as a starter. He had no interceptions in the two victories.

Hasselbeck had four touchdowns without an interception in the six quarters he'd played prior to suffering a knee injury against Minnesota. He will probably be rusty upon returning against the Packers. His experience will be key in avoiding the kind of mistakes that plagued Wallace against the 49ers.

"You see it every week in the league and it's hard to explain why a quarterback gets a little careless," Holmgren said. "He is not expected to win the game by himself, ever. But at the same time, that position has a lot of responsibility and Seneca has handled it very well, he really has. But (the 49ers game) was tough."

It's supposed to be cold and rainy tonight in Seattle... go figure. Looking forward to rooting for Jacob's team. Go Green Bay!!

A: The name Saints was the popular choice in a fan contest staged by the New Orleans States-Item. However, with or without the contest, the New Orleans team would most likely have been called the Saints. The franchise was awarded on All Saints Day, November 1, 1966. New Orleans was famous worldwide as the city of jazz and the famous marching song, “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Patriots VS Bears
Catherine's Football Trivia Question:

Q: Why were the Philadelphia Eagles named "The Eagles"?

___________________________________

Today the Patirots met the Bears in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where they played in weather hovering in the mid 50's.

I picked the Patriots because their helmets look like the American flag and they are 3 time Superbowl champs, so they can't be all bad.

There were several turnovers in this game. I don't have much Super Bowl hope for either team if neither offense can hold the ball. There were a lot of incidents of tipping the ball as well. After awhile it kinda looked like an expensive, angry game of extreme volleyball.

One thing that just cracked me up was the Patriots Quarterback, Brady, juked this huge linebacker to run the ball to a 1st down. He just cheered like "In your FACE". It cracked me up. Here's an official review of that game...
______________________

Patriots outclaw Bears, 17-13

New England survived five turnovers, coming up with four of their own and came away with a 17-13 win over the Chicago Bears at Gillette Stadium.

Asante Samuel was the defensive star of the game with three interceptions of Rex Grossman. As a whole, the Patriots defensive squad did not allow Chicago to really take advantage of their opportunities, holding them to only one touchdown. Tom Brady was 22 of 33 for 269 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions on tipped balls.

The first quarter began less the defensive struggle many predicted and more a series of miscues by both teams.

New England went three and out on the game's opening drive while Samuel picked off Grossman on the Chicago's first series. Although the turnover set the Patriots up first and 10 at the Bears 39, it was just the first of four that kept both teams off the scoreboard in the first quarter.

The second one came during the series after Samuel's pick. New England had a third and 8 from the Bears 24 and Brady looked down the middle to Watson. The ball was on the mark and it looked like Watson was going to come down with the catch at the 1-yard line but Bears safety Todd Johnson made the hit just as Watson's feet hit the ground and the ball popped up into the air. Charles Tillman came down with it at the 5-yard line.

Turnover number four happened when Grossman, on third down at the 5-yard line, fumbled the snap. Seymour made his second big play of the day by coming up with the recovery and New England escaped.

During the second quarter, Junior Seau was hurt and taken to the locker room with an arm injury.

Given the second life, Gostkowski made good, just sneaking the ball over the crossbar for a 10-3 Patriots lead at the half.

The turnovers continued into the second half, two of them coming on one play. On the Patriots second series of the third quarter, Brady completed what looked like a 23-yard pass to Watson around the Bears 20. From behind, Briggs punched the ball loose and into the air. Caldwell came down with it but he too was stripped by Manning with Manning making the recovery as well.

A roughing call on Charles Tillman, who hit Watson after double-fumble play, gave the Bears first and 10 at their 7. Grossman hit Mushin Muhammed for 18 yards to get some breathing room and then proceeded to start handing off to Jones. Jones ran seven times to the New England 29 but from there, Grossman looked to Clark and Samuel read it perfectly for his second interception of the game.

Three plays later it was yet another turnover.

___________________________

The game proceeded like that, even ended in an interception. One of the Bears' tuchdowns was totally because a series of terrible calls by the officiating staff, in my humble opinion. Entertaining game, but if you can't hang on to the ball and you have to count on the officials being on your team, ... like I said, don't look for either of these teams at the Super Bowl.

Trivia Answer:

A: When Bert Bell established his NFL franchise in Philadelphia in 1933, the country was struggling to recover from the Great Depression. New president Franklin D. Roosevelt had introduced his New Deal program through the National Recovery Administration, which had the Eagle as its symbol. Since Bell hoped his franchise also was headed for a new deal, he picked Eagles as the team name.

This was our Thanksgiving... What was YOURS like?
Our family has a tradition of going to our cabin in the Caribou Hills just out of Ninilchik. Usually by now we have real nice snow, but this year we were able to drive to the cabin with the pickup.

When we first got the cabin it had a lot of piled up trees along the edges of the driveway. We (and by we I mean the guys) have worked hard at clearing that area and felling other dead trees within about a 300 yard radius of the cabin. Recently we had a very strong windstorm that dropped a bunch of trees. So during this trip we (and again I mean the guys!) cut some more trees out of the trails, cut them into firewood and used the 4-wheelers to bring them to the cabin.

The second order of business was to take care of that pumpkin pie that Jan sent up with us. Look at the little turkey decorations. There were 3 but Thomas had to sample one.

It wasn't all work though. Rob cooked a wonderful Thanksgiving Day meal. He deep-fried a turkey and we had it with all the fixin's.

Later I taught my family how to play hearts (the card game) and we watched "V" for Vendetta.

The guys found out that Mom knows how to beat them bad at hearts. They're all working hard at learning how to beat me.

We sure missed having Jonny up there. He had to work. We will have the traditional dinner with Jonny tomorrow after church. But there was no way to make up dinner with Jacob. He's over seas and not able to be with us right now. We missed him terribly, but we're going to see him in January !!!

We love you, Jacob. See dad's site to see more pictures from our trip.

HTML, Here I Come!!

I fought this for as long as humanly possible... and I just HAD to GIVE IN...

I'm taking an HTML class online.
  • Good news is that it's free.

  • Bad news is that that's all I need is ANOTHER THING TO DO.
Luckily I have a buddy taking it with me. I talked her into it. She said, "HTML?? Sure, I'll take it. What is it?" Good thing it wasn't a pill!! Sweet how my friends trust me!

If you want to take it with us, that would be FUN!! It's an 11 week course. Click on the title of this posting and it will take you to the sign-up page.

Jags VS Giants
Monday night football.

I rooted for the Jacksonville Jaguars tonight. Mostly because their mascott looks like our cat Rajah. Sometimes we call her "Satan the Cat." She's the subject of a whole different post on another day.

The Jags let several points get away from them, but in the end they won. They have a tremendous quarterback, David Garrard. He's a backup, but he is huge and he's not afraid to rush when he doesn't have a better option. Check out the link there; he's got an interesting bio.

The coach, Jack Del Rio, has directed a steady course of improvement, with records of 5-11, 9-7 and 12-4, and a return to the playoffs through his first three seasons as their head coach. Tonight he was dressed in a suit. He's a very tall, big, blond guy. He looked so professional. Quite a change from what I'm used to seeing. I guess they are only allowed to wear a suit 2 weeks out of the season. That's just what the commentators of the game said. I may have mis- understood... I wonder if that's true and when it changed. Didn't Tom Landry always wear a suit? It kinda reminded me of basketball. Seems like basketball coaches always wear suits.

Jags' Matt Jones was very entertaining, 49 yards part of it backwards (!!) setting up yet another touchdown. One of those plays where I hop up and holler... "GO GO GO!! (hold breath...) Whoo Hooo!!"

One of the funniest things about the game was that the stands weren't even full after the temperature dropped to 40 degrees. OH.... brrrrrr. What wimps! The commentators were saying that it's not the players that have a problem with the weather. Just the fans!

The poor Giants just fell apart at the end of the game. Their quarterback Eli Manning just couldn't connect. 19/41 tonight... He did make one connection with Plaxico for a touchdown. However, he did have 2 interceptions; 13 on the year. I don't know enough about football to know if he's having a bad year or if the receivers or blockers aren't doing their job.

A very good game.

Letter From Jacob
Jacob just emailed me. This is why the focus of my web log expanded:

_________

Hey Mommy,

I love your site. I am so glad that you have done that. It's the best gift in the world that a mom could give a son in my situation.

I tell everyone about it, and I can see that they get on it as much as I do.

Well if you want to put more, tell them how safe I am. Look up RG 31 on google.com. Go to the first one you find and look at the specs of it. You will be happy. But I need to go now.
.
I love you mom. bye bye

Broncos drop to 7-3 at the hands of those dang Southern Boys
FOOTBALL TRIVIA: this from Catherine

Q: How did the Baltimore Ravens get their name?

Answer at the end of this posting.

_________________________________________________

KIM'S SPORTS MINUTE "SLASH" ADVICE COLUMN:

My hero, Mike Shanahan, and his team lost a very close game to the SanDiego Chargers bringing my Broncos to 7-3. An update is coming very soon on game highlights. Stone.com keeps me posted on Shanahan. Total fan.

I was looking for a good picture of my man Mike with his new glasses. He only wears them when he's reading, so they had a lot of shots with him in glasses since the offence was doing awesome tonight... well, for awhile they were. When the defense is in, their defensive coach Larry Coyer has the floor.

Ed McMann asked him if his glasses were prescription and he said, "No. They were $16.99 at Wallmart." Maybe so, but they sure do look good on him. I'll have to get a picture posted. You'll see... good choice of style too. He must have let his wife pick them out.

Guys, let your wife pick out your specks for you. We can't all afford hair transplants and personal trainers like Mr. Mike can... so at least let your wives help you where we can afford to help you!

Here are some highlights from Fox Sports:

Mike Bell's two touchdown runs gives Denver 14-7 lead at halftime

DENVER (AP) - Mike Bell scored two touchdowns on 3-yard runs to give Denver a 14-7 lead over the San Diego Chargers at halftime Sunday night in an AFC West showdown.

Bell's second touchdown of the quarter came with 34 seconds left in the first half. Running back Damien Nash provided a lift for the struggling Denver offense. Filling in for Bell, Nash had five carries for 55 yards and two catches for 24 yards, all in the second quarter.

_____________________

The full story is here, but the truth is that LaDanian Tomlinson was just on his game tonight.

Tomlinson reached 100 TDs faster than any player in NFL history. He did it in his 89th game, four fewer than it took Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith.

Jacob Visits Rome!
Jacob called today. He said that recently he was able to go to Rome for R&R!! WOW!!! He said that the art museums were breathtaking. He was amazed to see the originals of all these paintings! Originals, not copies!

He said there was so much to see and do. You see all these things on tv, but here he was looking at the real thing!

He also told me that they got a surprise visit by the comedian Christopher Titus! Jacob is a real fan of stand-up comedy, so it was real cool for him to be able to see Christopher Titus in person.

Please keep Jacob, Keith and all the other guys & gals in the armed forces in your prayers.

We love you, guys. Stay safe.

Good Being Done In Iraq
Air Force Chief Master Sgt. John Gebhardt, of the 332nd Expeditionary Medical Group at Balad, Iraq, cradles a young girl as they both sleep in the hospital. The girl's entire family was executed by insurgents; the killers shot her in the head as well. The girl received treatment at the U.S. military hospital in Balad, but cries and moans often. According to the nurses at the facility, Gebhardt is the only one who can calm down the girl, so he has spent the last several nights holding her while they both sleep in a chair.

Lia Sophia Jewelry Party - Items will come in time to give as Christmas gifts!
I went to Kelly Moore's house with Jan tonight to go to a Lia Sophia party. Jan and Kelly had never met. That was so fun having some of my old friends meet my new friend!!

I saw LESLIE there too!!!!! That just MADE MY DAY!!! I haven't seen Leslie in way way too long! Jill was there too and so was Angie. Jill and I decided it has been probably 2 years since we've seen one another. Wow. My Bible Study gals and I keep inviting Angie to Bible Study but she can never come... But she can make it to KELLY's HOUSE??? What's up with that?? So when she came I gave her the whole "Talk to the hand, girl!" routine! Well, she just plopped her little butt down right next to me and made me talk to her. I was coerced, I tell you!

So anyway, it was so awesome to see my friends again.

We had such a good time that I decided to have one of my own. I'm going to have a Lia Sophia party on December 12th at 7:00 pm! Anyone interested can come or order! The items will come in plenty of time for Christmas.

Here are some of my favorite sets.

Aren't they just beautiful?? Click on the link to see more of the Lia Sophia gallery. When I have my own party I'm going to pull out some of my favorite outfits and some of my jewelry to see if I can match some of my favorite pieces with what she has there. You know..... uh... cuz if I buy Lisa something for Christmas I want to be able to borrow it once in awhile! So I need to do my homework, making sure it matches my stuff!

Anyway, there will be a lot more on display at this upcoming party, too. Brooke, the hostess, said that she has a lot more inventory but that she didn't put it all out on the table tonight.

This would be a good time for all my friends who have their own business to be able to pass out business cards. Hey girls, we don't have to be at a bar or go golf to NETWORK with other movers and shakers!!

If you want to come to my party or order, email me at kimcoreson@hotmail.com or the hostess of the party, Brooke Carroll at 4carrolls@acsalaska.net.

Bring the fruit cake your neighbor just dropped off for you and come have a good time!

HOME SWEET HOME
I spoke to Jacob this morning and he said he's going to come home for a visit in January!! ~~``I'm so excited! ``~~~ I will see if I can get some days off of work to spend time with him.

My cousin, the Major that is serving there near Jacob, asked several of us if we would be interested in providing information for their media staff to get stories from soldiers and their families. He sent a form to me and one to Jacob.
.
I sure enjoyed seeing Keith and Jacob in the paper (see posting of article in my October blog archive). It was so cool to know that Keith was over there with him. I wish neither of them had to be there, but that's a given. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes from this other media inquiry.
.
Meanwhile my mind is racing about what we can do to make Jacob's stay extra nice. It will be winter, so we have a lot we can do outside and at the cabin. If it were summer I'd say we could go boat over to Seldovia, but I don't think that trip would be very pleasant this time of year. Maybe Keith will get time off at the same time and we could go visit them in Hawaii.
.
Ah-ha... There you have it.

Power Failure
We were watching the game last night and the power went out RIGHT in the MIDDLE of the game!! The Panthers were behind in the first quarter 0-7. There was no score in the second quarter.
.
We were watching in the third quarter and the power went out. Evidently the Panthers gained a huge lead in the third quarter, scoring 17 points. The Bucks didn't get any points at all.
.
Then in the 4th quarer the Bucks scored a field goal, but the Panthers scored a touchdown and PAT to end the game at 10-24 Panthers. Wahh... I'd have loved to watch that game!
.
Here's a professioal recap:
.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Jake Delhomme (deh-LOHM') threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes while the Carolina Panthers were erasing a 7-to-0 deficit in a 24-to-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
.
Keyshawn Johnson put the Panthers ahead to stay by grabbing a four-yard scoring pass from Delhomme, who was 22-of-34 for 240 yards and one interception. Steve Smith put the game out of reach with a 36-yard touchdown reception with three-eleven remaining.
.
Smith caught eight passes for 149 yards as the 5-and-4 Panthers ended a two-game skid. Julius Peppers had three sacks and recovered a fumble to lead the Panthers' defense.
.
The Bucs never reached the end zone after Bruce Gradkowski tossed a six-yard T-D pass to Ike Hilliard. Gradkowski passed for 173 yards but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble for the 2-and-7 Buccaneers.

So, we missed the best part of that game, dang it. The wind storm didn't only cause outages. First of all it was SO LOUD!! Rob's complaint was that it didn't even bring a dump of snow with it. That would have been awful! What snow we did have was blowing sideways as it was.
.
Jonny's girlfriend came over to have him help remove a tree from the driveway of the house she is watching. She couldn't get in the driveway because of the tree. He took Rob's truck over there and saved her day. "Taaa Daaaahhhhh" (he he)

Monday Night Football!! Buckaneers vs. Panthers
2-6 "Wait until next year." That is quickly becoming the refrain of Buckaneer fans, who are likely to witness their team finish with a losing record for the third time in the past four seasons. The once-proud defense is officially dead. There really is no link to the past, other than a few recognizable names on the back of the jerseys. The offense, which began last week's game against the Saints with six three-and-outs, is searching for an identity behind rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

VS

4-4
Carolina Panthers' quarterback Jake Delhomme said it's up to the players, not the coaches, to turn around the team's second-half scoring drought. Delhomme refuted the idea that the Panthers coaching staff is slow to make changes at halftime, despite the fact that in each of the last two games they've scored 14 points in the first half and none in the second. This week, the Panthers will look to turn things around when they host Tampa Bay on Monday night.

MY TEAM:

7-2 Broncos are still having a good year! However, things could be better. They'll regret not finishing off the Indianapolis Colts for a while, especially when playoff seeds are given out. But halfway into the season, the Broncos are pleased at where they stand. Denver is 7-2, the same as last year, and are tied for first place in the AFC West heading into Sunday's game with Oakland. "I feel like we have done some good things in the first half of the season," said Broncos coach Mike Shanahan -my own personal hero and role model. (... that's for you, Stone!)

First Real Snow

This is our first real snowfall of the year. Just to make Jacob nausiatingly homesick, I had Thomas get a close up of the snow just piling up in front of my broom... Poor Jacob.

Thomas said, "Ok, Mom. I got those pictures. Now I'll get a picture of what he REALLY wants to see!" and he turned around to take a shot of the SNOWMACHINE with snow on it! I bet he was right, huh Jacob?

The Latest From Jacob
This is not a picture of Jacob, but I thought it was sweet. Jacob really enjoyed the books I sent him. I don't even remember what all I sent. Chrissy Quigley gave me a few Max Lucado books and I think I sent him 2 of those. The one he mentioned was "The Applause of Heaven." He's reading that one and is enjoying it.

I also sent him a book of how to make paper airplanes and some paper to go with it. The other thing I sent was these little... well, .. they're like pills. The size of maybe a big vitamin or something. What they are is little compressed sponges. Add water and they blow up into little farm animals. :D He said the guys got a kick out of them!

I'd encourage all of you to write him or send him stuff. No food, cuz it takes so long to get there.

LOST THE HOUSE
This was me last night watching the election coverage. It was even worse than the Raiders vs Seahawks, who both played a terrible game Monday. What a waste of a good Monday Night Football evening. I thought I was mad then.... This was WORSE. Not a very loving attitude, huh?

My poor kids. They just stayed out of my way. Chris knew it was extra bad when I even accidentally cussed. I never swear. (Lord, forgive me...) I'm saying that a lot since last night. I got a bad attitude from all that. I need to get out of my funk and check out the Senate races.

All the news reporters were just giddy. If they'd just report reality, people would be properly informed. I challenge anyone to ask a soldier whose actually BEEN there how the war is going. Then decide if it's "working" or not.

Ok, I'm going to quit ranting.

Jonny came in at about 9:00 pm when he got off work. When he walked in I said, "Jonny! We lost the house! >:( " His jaw dropped and he started imagining life in an apartment. He had no idea I was talking about the House of Representatives. Poor kid.

I did get some good news though. The Democrats that we lost Republican seats to are Conservative Democrats. So very liberal leadership, like Peloci, is going to have to really reach to draw them in. The likelihood of Bush being able to appeal to their Conservative leanings is very high. So that is my hope... that no matter what their label, they will vote Conservative.

Mission Organization
This is what my laundry room looked like before I went on my mission to organize it. It's in the garage, so it seldom rates on my priority list, unfortunately.

This weekend everyone was gone and I decided to take a look at what all was in the boxes that I was storing above the washer and dryer. Next thing I knew I had a paint can open and a roller in my hand. What could I do? I had to give in and paint! All I did was paint the back wall white. The wall behind the hot water heater isn't taped yet, so I didn't continue painting. I'll have to make the taping a project for a weekend coming soon.

Rob got me this nice indoor/outdoor carpet that goes all the way from the garage man door to the back wall. Before it was just a small path of green indoor/outdoor carpet, some commercial carpet coming from the family room, some hodge-podge remnant and then concrete. This looks SO much nicer, don't you think!?

Before the cabinets were a pink pickle stain, mahogany stain and a golden oak type of stain. The stand that the hot water heater is on is constructed of scrap 2x4's. After I painted the back wall I painted the cabinets and 2x4 stand grey. My washer and dryer are a brushed nickel color, so it just looks wonderful. I'm thinking I might close off the stand and put a drawer accessible from the front for a little additional storage.

Once I get the wall behind the hot water heater taped I will paint it as well. I'm not sure if I have enough white to do that whole wall, so I think I will go to Spenard Builders and look for a mismatched white. I don't have high requirements for this room; I just want it to look clean, inviting and cohesive.

If you look closely, you might be able to see in the before pictures how the pipes behind and just to the right of the washer and dryer are obvious. I painted them all white except for the red and black handles on the cold and hot water spigots and the red valve of the gas pipe going up the in the back right corner. Later I plan on painting the exhaust pipe from the heater (hanging from the ceiling) white like the other pipes.

Two other projects I plan on in this room are 1) to add a light and 2) to add a little divider hanging from the ceiling above the length of the counter top. There is a plug in on the ceiling near the heater, so I will plug into that some sort of fixture and lead it to the center of that space. When I add the divider, I'd like to either recess 3 lights or install pendant lighting. I'll have to research sales, yard sales and my favorite... ebay(!!) to see what kind of deals I can find.

My goal is to do a little bit of real, measurable progress each weekend. I usually look at it as one big enormous project and think "UGGGGGG! This is INSURMOUNTABLE!!" But every journey begins with just one step, n'est pas?
